When corporate CEO’s abuse their power by denying access to quality health care, pollute our environment and endanger public health, or swindle their employees out of their pensions to pad their profits, the courts are the last resort for Americans to get a fair shake when they are up against powerful interests.

Our civil legal system has been a powerful force for positive change. It encourages corporations to act responsibly and provides an incentive for manufacturers to maintain and improve product safety. I urge you to oppose any efforts in Congress, the state legislatures or the administrative agencies that hinder people’s access to the courtroom and their ability to hold wrongdoers accountable in a court of law.

It is a sad fact of life today that major corporations in the pharmaceutical and insurance industries, along with big oil and the credit card companies, dominate our political process. These are the special interests that lobby for “tort reform,” which really means taking away the rights of regular Americans.
