I am outraged that thousands of citizens must continue to fight their insurance companies for a fair and just resolution to their claims two years after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast.   In these same two years, insurance companies have made more than $100 billion in profits. Unfortunately, this pattern of greed is all too familiar after major natural disasters. Insurance companies will do anything to deceitfully deny fair and just claims until policyholders are forced to settle for much less than they are entitled to receive – all in the name of keeping their profits.

I am writing to you both on behalf of these victims and as a concerned citizen. Natural disasters can strike anywhere.  What would happen if my home were hit by a natural disaster? Would I be covered, or the victim of insurance company greed?  Would my devastated neighborhood be rebuilt, or exploited by insurance companies doing everything they could to deny our fair claims?

Given the insurance companies’ pattern of greed after natural disasters, I ask that you convene public hearings to investigate these unconscionable insurance company practices after natural disasters and demand accountability and fair treatment for policyholders. Please don’t wait for a crisis to happen again before something is done.
