You must act now to pass the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Reform Act.

This bill will enable stronger consumer protections for vulnerable American families and children in an increasingly global marketplace.  Though the CPSC has been charged with protecting consumers from dangerous products, the agency clearly lacks the necessary resources and legal authority to fulfill its mandate.

A record high of 473 products were recalled in 2007, including 25 million hazardous toys.   According to the agency’s own data, the 27,000 deaths and 33 million injuries that result from products under CPSC jurisdiction costs the United States Economy over $800 billion every year.

Clearly the CPSC needs help in meeting its core mission of keeping our citizens safe from dangerous products.  Therefore, Congress must act now to make sure that this vital agency has sufficient means to protect consumers from harmful products before they reach the marketplace.

Instead of reacting to deaths and injuries as the commission currently does, the CPSC Reform Act helps the CPSC proactively stop dangerous products.  Stronger enforcement authority will lead to safer products which in turn will result in fewer injuries.
