I am writing to express my unequivocal support for the creation of a Consumer Financial Protection Agency.  The financial meltdown of 2008 can be directly attributed to the fact that government regulators allowed the major financial institutions of Wall Street to conduct business in a reckless and unconstrained manner.  While this incredulous behavior went unchecked, consumers were held hostage by predatory mortgages, and one-sided consumer agreements that usurped the consumer protection laws meant to protect them.  Adding insult to injury were the appeals to the American taxpayer to “bail-out” these financial institutions deemed “too big to fail.”  Despite strong objections from a significant portion of the American people Congress provided these Wall Street financial institutions a life line with no strings attached.  Thus it is no surprise that these same financial institutions that went unchecked prior to the meltdown continue to engage in unscrupulous behavior such as paying their top executives excessive bonuses.

While many will try to frame the creation of this agency as the expansion of government, the more accurate description is that this agency represents the role and duty of government.  You were sent to Congress to represent the interest of your constituents, and not those of the well connected and most powerful.  You can not allow the creation of this Consumer Financial Protection Agency to fall by the wayside at the behest of Wall Street and their team of lobbyist.

The election of President Barack Obama is supposed to usher in a new era of transparency and competent governance.  The creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency would be a huge step in this direction.  You have a responsibility to your constituents to ensure that the financial collapse of 2008 is not relived by future generations.  Please support the creation of a Consumer Financial Protection Agency.
